I was raised to believe in the value of capital punishment as a valid form of justice and deterrence sanctioned by Holy Scripture. But over the last few decades it feels like even the far right has realized that’s all bullshit and we can do better. There are a hundred people on death row. How hard would it be to just provide them with a comfortable place to wile away their days?
So instead of backing down in the face of an overwhelming amount of evidence that capital punishment doesn’t work, they become rabid. When I was a kid (not very long ago!) the death penalty was seen as a necessary evil, even among the right. It was an unspeakable, joyless deed to be carried out with the utmost solemnity, not because we wanted to, because we HAD to.
Now we have cheering crowds and tweets like this.
